Mediterranean Island Pirate Mega-Map ReaperCon 2012
I made a bunch more loose crates, chests, and barrels to be scattered around individually.

After that, I decided to try my hand at a better shark.

For inspiration, I looked at this pic.

-----

To start off, I took a small soft plastic dolphin toy from my bag of birthday party give-aways.

------

A little bit of attention with an X-acto blade, and I had transformed the center of the dolphin into an oversized shark fin (we are going for drama here).

-----

While I was at it, I used part of the dolphin's tail to form the protruding tip of a shark tail. These were then hit with gray primer and allowed to dry while I worked on the rest of the shark.

-----

I blew up a picture of a shark photographed from below to provide a proper silhouette. Since I wanted the mirror reverse of this image (and forgot to flip it with my photo editing program), I then outlined it with a sharpy marker.

-----

And traced it from the underside of the paper to get my desired outline. (All this extra work proved unnecessary as I could have just flipped the paper over after cutting out my template.   Blush  )

-----

I still had a scrap of the very thin (and fragile) clear rigid plastic that used to cover a poster that I used in making the clear walking areas of my Rough and Ready D&D Sailing Ships.

-----

I covered this with some painters tape,...

-----
...traced out my shark template,...

-----

...and carefully trimmed away the painters tape leaving a shark shape piece of exposed plastic.

-----

A quick hit with some matte gray primer, and I had my basic shark silhouette.

-----

I used my thin HotWire scroll saw to round out the plastic. To clean up the edges, I dragged the edge of a knife perpendicularly around the plastic. This left the edges nice and clear. If I had used sandpaper it would have frosted the edges.

-----

Once the paint on the fins had (mostly) dried, I hot glued them to the plastic in the appropriate places. I then placed the silhouette on some plastic wrap and hit it with a generous covering of clear caulk.

(I know the dorsal shark fin is overly large for this silhouette, but I decided to err on the side of drama rather than reality. That, and I did not want to go back and re-carve my dorsal fin after I saw it was too big.   Big Grin  )

-----

Once this caulk cures, I will probably add a small amount of foam coming off the back of the dorsal fin, and possibly the tail, but that will have to wait until tomorrow morning. I will also gloss the exposed fins with some clear nail polish.

Tomorrow is also when I pick up the van I am borrowing to transport the map. I will see if I can take some last pics of everything together before I load up for ReaperCon.

Until morning.   Big Grin
LAST DAY!!

-----

The shark is finished. There are some more tweaks I might like to make (and some things I would do differently if I had to do it over), but I am out of time so this will have the be good enough.

At least it is an improvement over the original attempt.

Our beleaguered scout trooper finds himself adrift after learning just what a career as a kraken proctologist entails. He drags himself aboard a nearby drifting raft and starts applying rum externally and internally in an attempt to remove the vestiges of his recent journey from his armor and his brain.

"At least this day couldn't get any worse" he thinks to himself...

That shark turned out fantastic! I'm anxiously awaiting some final overview shots.  Smile  Hopefully people at the event will take plenty of pictures and get some back to you to share with us, too.

@ ForestZ and N810 - Thanks.  Smile
OK, I am calling this project done.   Smile

It is hard to imagine that it was only 6 1/2 weeks ago that I started this project with a rough sketch arriving in my e-mail and a healthy dose of panic.

I have tried so many new things and learned so much along the way. For a first journey outside the realm of hexes, I had a blast. I think I see some more non-hex terrain in my future.   Big Grin

(Don't worry, there will still be hexes too.   Big Grin  )

Thank you all for the suggestions and the encouragement. They really kept me going. You all are a great part of why this project was finished at all, and for why it came out as nicely as it did. Again, thank you.   Smile  Smile

Here is an overview shot of the finished map, and a few closeups of some details.

This is fantastic looking. There are several photos in which it is hard to tell that it is a model.

Have fun at Reaper-Con, I look forward to the after action photos.

Thanks Elderac.  Smile

During play, the main island will be broken up into three sections.

(EDIT:  In actual play, all the maps stayed together and the games were played side-by-side.)

-----

The first map includes the arrival ramp, causeway, and collapsed natural stairwell. Players will have to cross through each other on the way to the opposite corners.

Rest assured there will be plenty of action pics from the convention.   Big Grin

It's stupid how much I like that shark...every shot that he's in I get a little giddy looking at it, haha. Not to belittle the effort and fantastic results on the entire map, because it's all incredible, but sometimes it's the little things that titillate. And that shark just elevates the feel of the entire map for me. (Those crows cages rank a close second.)

Unfreakingbelievable! This has been the most amazing terrain thread I have ever followed. Everything smacks of realism. I love how all the cliff faces turned out, and the water is so............well, watery. And all those little touches sell the illusion and make the whole thing POP. (I love the shark.) I can see how letting this beauty go will be difficult.

You done yourself proud boy.

Fantastic, I really love how this has come out.

I am tempted to make my own version of the temple complex section for my own gaming table.

The Shark looks great too!

I was going to comment, but then I read ForestZ's comment (quoted below) and realized everything I wanted to say had already been said. I agree 100%!

A little update for everyone that has been following this thread: the maps are safely arrived at their destination.

@Lordober: Ableman sort of did:

There were two stacks of cards on the maps with the URL to TG and instructions on how to access this thread.

A close-up of the card:

Here is the shark, the stormtrooper, and a wall in the Reaper Miniatures Factory holding all the minis for the Warlord skirmish game.

(And, yes, this means that I was able to attend Reapercon; was not sure it would happen but it did and with any luck I will have a chance to play a skirmish game on this map sometime between now and Sunday.)  Big Grin

Thanks pendrake!  Smile
Hello all. We are still in the middle of the convention, but I thought I would share a few teaser pics with you.

The responses to the map have been overwhelmingly positive and appreciative. It is wonderful to see so many people having a good time playing on it.

It has also been great getting to meet folks in person that I have only known previously through TerraGenesis.

(I did not adjust my camera settings for the warehouse lighting so some of the shadows have a greenish cast to them in some of the pics).

I will do a better after-action post when I return from the convention. Hopefully this will give you a taste of what the map looks like in action.

Back to fun.   Big Grin

It looks great. Is that the companion map in the distance in that first shot?

The action photos are good. I wish, though, that all of the figures were painted. That is not your fault, though.

Hope you are having a great time.

To quote from my response to a similar comment on my Mountain Hex Map thread:

Quote:ableman33 said:

Different folks play different games, enjoy different styles of play, have different levels of skill, and different levels of time and resources. Some would rather put their effort into detailing their core units and playing only with those that are fully finished. Others care less about unit looks and would play with bottlecaps or simple cardboard cut-outs. Both take pleasure in their games equally.

For me personally, I take the greatest satisfaction in spending time with others playing a game we both enjoy. The particular game, or the state of the pieces of said game, are of lesser importance to me.

Others I know take their greatest pleasure from other aspects. My hope is that we can all enjoy our shared experience without letting our differences get between us.

Happy building and playing everyone. Back to the con.   Big Grin

Hey stubbdog & abbleman33, I popped in at ReaperCon today (Saturday) and I just wanted to thank you both for taking a little time out and talking about your stunning terrain!!!!    Rolleyes

I'm so gonna get to work on my Reptus and hopefully see you guys next year!   Big Grin
Thanks all. I will post more pics when I get home.

I have decided to accept offers on my map. I figure if someone is willing to pay for it, they will likely get better use out of it than I would. No offers yet, but I just put up my sign yesterday.

-----

Many people have been fascinated by my shark. The inspiration for it came from part of Capn Rum's Pirates Archipelago entry into the 2011-05 3 of a Kind competition.

Sadly, the competition WIP thread is long gone. In the ocean around one of his islands, Capn Rum added a silhouette of a shark. I took that idea and modified it for my purposes.
