An alternative, and this makes more sense to me, is to have 4 points, but a max of 2 shots per side, per turn. That way there is the ability to shoot from both sides in a turn, but a reduced likelihood of a shoot single turn sinking.
I had a random thought about ships, shooting, and simplicity. Goes like this:
1 mast - schooners and cutters = 2 shot dice.
2 masts - brigs, ketches, large schooners = 3 shot dice.
3 masts - frigates, ships of the line, galleons = 4 shot dice.
If there are 3 gundecks 6, 5, or 4 scores damage.
If there are 2 gundecks 6 or 5 scores damage.
If there is a single gundeck only a 6 scores damage.
It seems like an elegant mechanic but not sure how to connect it to rest of the rules or how to assign damage points to ships.
