FAQ: What is EII?

Enterprise information integration is a software-assisted means of facilitating data integration. EII generally requires an ability to communicate with many different data systems together with an ability to interpret many types of data (e.g. tables, images, maps, spreadsheets).

EII is made possible by:

  • WWW: because anything can be reached from anywhere.
  • RDBMS: a structured means of storing gobs of information which can now be accessed via the WWW.
  • Object-Oriented Business Logic: that helps the lay user to build applications without heavy horsepower help.

EII software typically includes rapid development tools which allow the replacement of the DBA/data application developers with lay subject matter experts. Because data are so easy to reach over the web by using RDBMS API connections, new tools are popping up which help lay personnel build complex data applications. Because DBA assistance is no longer required to connect tables behind the scenes, the lay user can make database relationships virtually. Because virtual relationship do not need top level approval within a complex organization, building applications can be a very rapid process.

Enterprise integration goals include:

  • Uniform data access.
  • Uniform data presentation.

Many definitions include a single portal. Perhaps, but if data can talk and cooperate, there can be less strict approaches. More important are:

  • Continual monitoring for, and the removal of − redundant data.
  • Ensuring dataset linkage and domain feeding.
  • Guarding against proprietary structures (or anything whatsoever) which limits data access or interoperability.
